Seaman Welfare Community Centre

The existed Chapel Mills building in Southampton was turned into Seafarers Welfare Centre.

Chapel Mills  is a listed Building that is located in Southampton. It is emphasized by the harbour nearby. The task was about finding the link with its history, dedicating Chapel Mills into its sufficient use. The history takes its beginning since 1220, it is used to be  traditional tidal mill in St Mary’s parish, dating back to medieval times, bakery providing biscuits for the victualling of the Royal Navy during the American WAR of Independence and a grain Store to increase the victualling of the fleet at the time of the Napoleonic wars.

Researching the Seafaring industry, it turns up as very Brutal and extremely stressful environment to work at. The sailors are dealing with storms, racism, low protection, isolation & loneliness, poor work environment, sexual harassment, overworking and even shipwrecks fatality. Thus, I decided to create Seaman Welfare & Community Centre for sailors, where they can rest, meet their family or get a necessary help.
